The Referral Specialist

The Referral Specialist is a recruitment consultancy based in Amsterdam focused on building sustainable hiring through social network and ambassador activation strategies. Founded by Michael Boud and Maaike Willems, who together bring over 50 years of combined experience in recruitment strategy, the firm helps organisations structure and activate employee referral programmes to scale talent acquisition. Rather than relying on traditional job boards and mass outreach, The Referral Specialist enables companies to systematically tap into their existing networks where trust, recognition, and personal recommendations motivate people to engage.

The company's core insight is that referral hiring succeeds when ambassador engagement is structurally organised and continuously activated. Their research, which analysed more than 2,000 organisations across Europe through the Referral Recruitment Benchmark, demonstrates that many referral programmes fail because activation is inconsistent or poorly managed. The Referral Specialist converts this insight into structured programmes and strategy. Their approach combines research (mapping target audiences, behaviour, and existing networks), strategy development (translating insights into social network strategy), network activation (engaging ambassadors and campaigns), and embedding (ensuring direction, follow-up, and ownership).

The firm works across multiple contexts, helping organisations, regions, and partnerships recruit employees, students, career switchers, and volunteers through strategically activated ambassador networks. Their client base includes large European organisations seeking to improve recruitment velocity and candidate quality through referral mechanisms rather than traditional recruitment channels.
